“Her eyes – naturally dark and exotic – had been intensified beyond belief, and her features, already perfect in his eyes, highlighted subtly to enhance her loveliness, if that were at all possible. Her skin, now much darker, was offset by a deep crimson dress, a perfect foil for her long, painted nails and fingers adorned with jewels. A lump appeared in his throat, and he found himself being drawn to her in a way he’d never experienced.”

Brad is dumbfounded, in awe, bemused, and utterly, utterly star-struck! Is this really his wife on the dais? How can this be? Yesterday she was a seemingly strait-laced, and determinedly-ambitious, successful real-estate agent…tonight a stunningly gorgeous, breath-taking Fortune Teller! Why? What went wrong?

For Allie, though, it’s a case of ‘what went right!’. She chose this path for a reason. This career change had been in the making for weeks…a plan to break free from the demands of her job. Now the challenge for her is – can she make this work?

But Brad’s the one who is strait-laced. He could derail all her hard work. And he’s not the only one in that position. This could be the toughest fight she’s ever had to face…

John’s wife Sarah has passed away. She was still young. John starts to blame himself.

Part and parcel of living is that we can often give way to personal crucifixion when things go wrong. That’s when the ‘what ifs’ and ‘if only’ thoughts tend to invade our psyche, and we beat ourselves up for all the things we should have done, and didn’t do better. But that’s life, and life for even the most successful of us, is full of regrets.

Self-scrutiny can work in two ways. It sets the stage that allows us to beat ourselves up for past failures, and robs us not only of the life we must continue, but also of the self-esteem necessary to continue that life. Self-scrutiny is the one thing that has the capacity to render us vulnerable, to cripple our future, and opens us up to a feeling of failure that serves no-one.

But what if we could choose an alternative pathway, if we could find the courage and the inspiration to paint for ourselves a brand-new life, where we are the mainstay, the anchor in rebuilding the lives of others? What too, if on that same journey, we could find the secret to healing and fulfilment?

James needs to use all his cunning and diplomacy on his posh mum, not only to get what he wants, but also to get her to lighten up. Here’s a snippet:

———-

“James, don’t you dare speak to me like that! Just wait till I tell your father.”

“Tell him ‘bout what exactly?”

SILENCE! He knew he’d rattled her. Eventually James began to speak, not to his mother but to himself, a stage-whisper once again of a list of things his mum needed to tell his dad about, when he got home from his trip. Tuesday 23rd May he began…

  • Panic response to blood on son’s T-shirt, the result of which was….
  • Driving on highway still dressed in dressing gown
  • Dangerous driving on same highway, almost causing multiple accidents!
  • Road rage – would have had to be seen to be believed!
  • Breaking traffic rules, many rules!
  • Being pulled over by cops then giving them a sob story about son’s accident
  • Eventually being rescued by thugs, louts, lower-class citizens – choose your own definition!
  • Broken promise about a bike ride with a lower-class citizen

“Do you HAVE to go on James? You’ve made your point. Besides, that’s blackmail you know,” she said tiredly.

“Merely stating facts,” he replied laconically. He was almost enjoying himself. James’ mum was outraged, but at the same time she was beginning to recognize some attributes in her son that she’d never recognized before. This kind of rhetoric would beat the President of the United States into submission! She’d never heard him reason so convincingly…or, so cunningly!

How did all this come about? What’s going to happen now? Would you have managed to do what James did?
